Facebook: Convert a Personal Profile Page to a Business Page

FacebookIf you are like most photographers, you started using Facebook as a personal profile, instead of a business page. The advantages of using Facebook as a business are:

1. You can have an unlimited number of friends

2. You can create Facebook ads

3. You don’t have to manually accept new friends/clients

If you been wanting to create a business page, but were frustrated because you weren’t able to bring all your friends and clients along with you automatically, now you can.

Facebook has made it easy to convert your personal account to a business page, just click here to get started.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind though. First, all your friends will be added as people who like your page, and your Profile picture will be transferred but no other data will. This means any other pictures or content you have will need to be downloaded:

  • By default, only your profile photo transfers, no other profile photos profile information is moved over.
  • Any uploaded photos, wall posts, comments or likes are removed.
  • Facebook messages are removed
  • Any applications linked to a Facebook account lose that connection

You can easily download your information by clicking on the Account drop down menu on your Facebook Profile and then clicking on “Learn More”, then Download Your Information. Once you’ve converted to a business page, you can re-post your photos and links.

This is great, but I have a personal profile and a business page. What must I do to get them merged? I have more friends on my personal profile and don’t wan to loose them. How do suggest I go about accomplishing what you suggest in your article when you currently have both?

If I convert my friends from my personal page to my business page to become fans, will I lose them as friends on my personal page. I don’t want to lose them, because when I up load photos to my business page I want to be able to tag them.

Nelson – if you have a personal profile and a business page, this article doesn’t apply to you.

Bob – if you are using your FB personal page as a business page, you are breaking the Facebook T&C (terms and conditions) and can be banned. My bet is they added this new feature now with the plan to clamp down harder on violators in the near future.

If you use FB for personal use, create a new business page and ask your friends to re-signup. It will be hard, but it works. If you use FB for business, use the easy conversion tool and lose your personal page. But if you keep using FB for both personal and business, you’re skating on thin ice. Facebook bans 20,000 people every day for various reasons – don’t think it cannot happen to you!

I’ve been on Facebook for a long time, a few years. I’ve collected a lot of friends in that time. I use my personal profile page for both business and personal, but that’s because it’s all me, I’m both! It’s who I am. I also have a business page but it’s just not as much fun as my personal page. What a decision to have to make. I wonder if I can create a new personal profile page after I make the transition … we’ll see. I’m going to do it because it’s the right thing to do. It would be embarrassing to get banned. Then it would all be over. No more Facebook … ? … can’t live that way. ;) I already began the process … just waiting for the email to arrive that says my downloaded info is completed. Here goes ….
