10 YouTube Channels for Photographers
Photography is a visual medium. That’s why it makes perfect sense to watch videos about photography instead of reading about it. Spending a few minutes learning a new technique or tip each day will help keep you on the cutting edge of your profession.
Below are 10 YouTube channels (think of them as weekly TV shows) I’ve reviewed and can recommend to photographers at all skill levels. Most of the videos are 2-10 minutes long, so they would be easy to watch in the morning with a cup of coffee or during breakfast.
Start by reviewing each channel below. If you find one you like, log into YouTube, click the “subscribe” button for that channel, and click “email each upload” so you’ll get an email reminder when a new video from that channel is uploaded.
10 YouTube Channels for Photographers
1. SLRLounge – Over 100 videos tied to a huge website designed to train pro photographers. Virtually every “how-to” subject is covered. This is a must-subscribe video.
2. Adorama – This daily video is one of the best. It has several different channels, each focused on a different aspect of photography. For example, the 1-on-1 series is for beginners, while the “How’d they do that?” series interviews pro photographers and has them explain and recreate a specific look or type of photography.
3. FStoppers – This year-old video channel is filled with videos made by other pro photographers explaining how they achieved a specific shot or effect. I loved the video of a photographer on an inner tube photographing a skier jumping over his head while both were being pulled by a speedboat.
4. DigitalRev – Equipment reviews, lens comparisons and a few hands-on tutorials. These 12 minute videos have a sarcastic, edgy feel that will appeal to a younger photographer. It is like watching an MTV video.
5. Lighten Up and Shoot – This video channel and website highlight the adventures of Andy and Mikey. Their “street photography” style combines minimal equipment and raw energy to make a new kind of photography that would definitely appeal to younger viewers. If I shot high school seniors, this channel would certainly be on my list.
6. Michael Andrew – Photography tutorials and techniques for the beginner given in a factual style. Each 3-5 minute video is on a single subject, making it easy to scan through dozen’s of videos looking for a particular subject you’re interested in.
7. Camera Labs – Gordon Laing from CameraLabs.com reviews a wide range of digital cameras. Each video is tied to a written review on the website. I wouldn’t subscribe to this channel, but I’d definitely visit to see if they had a model I was thinking about purchasing.
8. Dave Dugdale – Tips/tricks on shooting/editing video using a DSLR camera. The video channel ties in with Dave’s blog, where he teaches by showing you his journey into learning how to create short videos. If you ever wanted to expand your business into video, this is a great training resource to get started.
9. Gavin Hoey – Six to 10 minute videos, each designed to teach a specific Photoshop technique to a pro photographer. Gavin is fun to listen to, and you’ll learn something useful in every video. If you use Photoshop, I’d definitely recommend this one.
10. FroKnowsPhoto – Jarid Polin looks and acts like a stoner from the 70′s. But he’s also a pro photographer. If I was a young photographer looking for tips and tricks, I’d subscribe to this channel just for the fun of it. Everyone else should view at their own risk!
