One of the best upgrades you can make to your website is to use product photography instead of simply showing images. Retailers do this all the time. For example, clothing stores show models in their outfits, and furniture stores show room groupings.
Yet most portrait, wedding, school or sports photographers don’t show product photography on their website - either in their portfolio, or to show print products they offer for sale.
I get it. For many portrait or outdoor photographers, product photography uses different lighting techniques, is entirely studio focused, and requires a unique mindset (you can’t get a wineglass to smile). Besides, if you’re not already making money with product photography, why waste the time instead of simply posting images from past (paying) clients or events you already have on your hard drive?
But this doesn’t change the fact that the ability to create good product photography should be one of the tools in every professional photographer’s toolbox. For example, some of Sam Sarkis’ table photography is as attractive as the wedding portraits.
So to encourage photographers to give product photography a try, we’ve decided to hold a contest to pick the best product photograph our clients send to JD. The rules are simple:
- One entry per photographer.
- Files no larger than 800×600 @ 72 dpi. Save as JPG file and attach to the email.
- Send images to email@example.com with studio name, email, phone, and best time to call if we have any questions.
- Include a short note describing what kind of photography you usually shoot, and how you created the image.
- Images must be received by Sunday, Oct 27th, 2013.
- Images may be displayed online. You should have model releases if required.
We will pick the top image(s), and the winners will receive a gift certificate for $100 to use at the lab.

JDPI will update its shipping prices beginning July 22nd. While some of you will only see small changes, some will see more. This has been a tough decision to make, so let me explain why we’ve made it.
Back in the day, like many labs we were able to offer “free shipping.” Obviously, shipping was never free, but we could offer it because shipping cost less, and most orders were large enough to include the cost of shipping in the price of prints.
However, over time, shipping has gotten much more expensive. Shippers like UPS have changed their pricing policies to “reward” easy deliveries on their regular routes, while penalizing deliveries that take extra time (and fuel). For example, a residential or rural delivery can us cost twice as much as a business delivery – even in the same zip code! Some small orders cost more to ship than we invoice.
So here’s what we’ve decided to do:
- Orders over $50 – shipping as low as $1.95 an order
- Orders under $50 – shipping as low as $5.95 per order
- Orders over 11×14″ or over 15lbs. will be shipped via UPS
Here’s our full pricing schedule:
If your average order is less than $50, you should upgrade to JDLab2You. Our new JDLab2You software makes it easy to meet the $50 total by allowing you to order virtually everything in our catalog in a single order. You can even order from several folders of images and combine them into a single order.
If you have any questions about our new shipping policy, please feel free to contact me directly at (810) 252-4655 or email Tom@JDLab.com.

JD School Pictures will co-sponsor the School Photography Bootcamp July 8-12 in Nashville, Tennessee.
This popular five day program is in its 8th season. It is the most comprehensive training available for independent photographers and studios who want to enter the lucrative underclass school photo market. A highlight of the week-long program is a simulated classroom photo session using local children as models when attendees get to see a wide range of imaging technologies in action.
You can save $100 if you register by June 6, 2012.The program sells out every year, so early registration is recommended.
JD customers get an additional $50 off by using Discount Code 50bc2012 when registering.
The program is taught by Chris Wunder, Cr. Photog. ASP, one of the School Photo industry’s most popular instructors. Guest instructors will also be featured.
A program synopsis, registration fees and information is available here.

JD now offers ink jet printing directly on metallic canvas material, and the results are amazing. Compared to traditional canvas prints, the new material offers richer blacks, deeper saturated colors, and the iridescent quality of metallic paper combined with the unique texture of canvas. You have to see it to believe it.
Because these are such high-quality prints, we have decided to replace our traditional metallic paper bonded to canvas with this new product.
Photographers who have examined the difference are delighted with the new material, and we’re confident you will be too.

After listening to clients tell us they were looking for a simpler way to order from us, we created JDLab2You. This program was designed for photographers and their staff who want an easy-to-use program featuring only our most popular products.
Here’s what you get:
• Easy to Use – imagine ordering a print with just mouse clicks only!
• Easy to Order – Need a photo book and a canvas gallery wrap in the same order? No problem!
• Products You Want – Only the most popular products ordered by pro photographers are included.
• Products You Need – Order a print for every retail frame size available.
• Modern Design – All new background designs, fonts and colors give your products a fresh, new look.
For our current clients, you can still use ROES Pro, or you can use both programs side-by-side on your Mac or PC. You will still need to use ROES Pro if you need sports and school templates, or non-color corrected (econo) printing. Both these will be rolled out as separate catalogs in JDLab2You in the upcoming weeks.
